What would you like to share with the Latino community? My life was falling apart and I had no option but to face them. I started working full time. On many occasions I wanted to give up and drop out of school. But I didn’t want to be another statistic. I thought to myself, “So this is why many people don’t finish college, this is what people mean by life is hard and this is why we don’t have Latina representation.” I had done so well in school my entire life and felt devastated to know that was where it ended. So what did I do? I kept fighting. I fought through family problems, personal problems, financial problems and I fought through it all while having a full time job and still attending school full time.
I have always loved science. I knew there weren’t enough Latinas in the STEM field and I was determined to change that. And that’s exactly what I did. I want to be a role model for all the first generation students, for our Latinx community and for women in general. Today, I am a Lab Scientist and the only Latin representation in the building. Life is hard, but without an education it’s even harder. Así que señoritas, a ponerse las pilas.
